What CCPC is not. What it does not do.
Cebu Citizens – Press Council
What CCPC is not. What it does not do.
MEMBERSHIP. CCPC members shall be selected for (a) their rich experience with the media industry or substantial knowledge of media work, and (b) shared passion with Council advocacy for a free and responsible press and for a more literate media audience.
Each seat does not officially represent a specific media outlet or news organization, each member contributing his or her service personally and individually. Not like Cebu News Workers Foundation or Cenewof, where seats for trustees/directors are allotted for specific news media sectors.
Endorsement by a group or groups will help but won’t be a requirement for a member’s entry. Selection of CCPC members shall strive for diversity, based on the membership numbers laid down, but competence and willingness to serve shall be the primary criterion.
ACTION ON COMPLAINT. CCPC’s action on a complaint against the published material of a media practitioner or outlet, or organization consists primarily of looking into the complaint, finding out if any law or standard has been violated by a media report, feature or opinion and, when appropriate, recommending ways to avoid a future lapse or omission.
CCPC does not adjudicate the controversy or issue. It does not impose or enforce any remedy or sanction. CCPC depends primarily on willingness of complainant and media concerned to submit to conciliation or mediation.
Through consultations with the stakeholders on both sides, CCPC seeks to improve or update standards and procedures in news coverage of specific sectors of news sources, such as the police and military, election officers, publicists in government and private companies, even the clergy.
OPINION ON ISSUE OR CONTROVERSY. CCPC may express its official view on an issue, contentious or not, primarily when it relates to media standards or procedures or when it involves press freedom and responsibility, concerns that affect media consumers’ understanding of, and trust in, the news media.
